'Fear the worst' for kidnapped mobster | Canada | News | Toronto Sun

'Fear the worst' for kidnapped mobster | Canada | News | Toronto Sun: "It's been four days since the number three man in the Rizzuto mafia clan went missing and organized crime experts say Paolo Renda's life could be in serious danger if he isn't soon found alive.
Renda's wife, Maria, alerted police to her 70-year-old husband's disappearance Thursday afternoon, but the Montreal police major crimes unit has so far been unsuccessful in its search for the man.
Authorities are staying tight-lipped about any leads they've received so far. 'There are no developments in this case,' said Montreal police spokesman Daniel Lacoursiere. 'Kidnapping is still the main hypothesis, but all leads are being looked into at this point.'
According to former RCMP intelligence analyst Pierre de Champlain, 'there is reason to fear the worst' for the consigliere of Montreal's best-known organized crime family.
'Given his importance and his influence in the Montreal mafia, it makes him a special case. Remember that his nephew, Nick Rizzuto Jr., was killed five months ago,' he noted.
For de Champlain, who has written three books on organized crime, there's no doubt that the kidnapping stems from the intense competition between the various Italian clans to replace the Rizzutos as the top mafia family.
'This family has been the head of the Montreal mafia since 1984, so they're trying to unseat them,' he said."
