Soboma George was shot during a gunfight in the oil hub of Port Harcourt

Soboma George, a one-time militant leader who accepted a government amnesty last year, was shot during a gunfight in the oil hub of Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers state, before being taken away by gunmen.

"He was shot in a clash between rival cult groups around the Nembe area of Borokiri, in Port Harcourt," Rivers state police spokeswoman Rita Inoma-Abbey said, adding one woman was killed.

"We are monitoring the situation so that it does not degenerate," she said.

Security sources said George, who originally led a gang called the Outlaws and has a significant following in Rivers state, had been killed in the shootout.

Police could not confirm whether he had died.

The restive Niger Delta, the heartland of Africa's biggest oil and gas industry, has been relatively peaceful since last year's amnesty programme, which saw thousands of former militants hand over weapons in return for clemency.

But many of the criminal gangs notorious for blowing up oil pipelines and kidnapping oil workers originally enjoyed political backing and were set up to help rig elections, rights groups and security analysts say.

Crime Family Patriarch Killed in Melbourne - WSJ.com: "patriarch of an Australian crime family was gunned down in his suburban backyard here Friday, the latest tit-for-tat killing in a Melbourne underworld war that has claimed more than 30 lives since the late 1990s.

Police officers in Melbourne, Australia, leave the home of Macchour Chaouk, who was gunned down Friday.Drug-related gangland slayings have cut a swathe through the criminal ranks in Melbourne, a city better known for its thriving restaurant and nightclub scene and appealing climate.
With many of the city's main criminals either dead or imprisoned, police had believed the drug war was under control, but it reignited Friday when convicted heroin trafficker Macchour Chaouk was killed in a drive-by shooting.
Mr. Chaouk, who was 65 years old and had multiple assault convictions, was known to police as the head of a family crime syndicate operating in Australia's second-largest city, with a population of four million.
'They basically ran the whole gamut of organized criminal activity,' said Senior Sergeant Greg Davies, secretary of the police officer's union, the Victoria Police Association."
