Day 5 of Manhunt for Jamaica’s Public Enemy « Liveshots: "Day five of a manhunt for Jamaica's public enemy #1, Christopher Coke, aka 'Short Man,' aka 'President,' aka 'Dudas.'
Short man I get, he's just over five feet tall. President I get, he heads an international drug consortium that supplies cocaine and marijuana to the U.S. but 'Dudas' is what everybody calls him here. Supporters even hung a sign on a street dog that said they would fight to the death for 'Dudas.'
Some details about Dudas have been coming out in the local media - father of four, vegetarian, never gives interviews."

53 year old Christopher ‘Christy’ Kinahan, who was arrested at his luxury villa in Estepona

Posted On 14:18 0 comments

The boss of the group has been named as 53 year old Christopher ‘Christy’ Kinahan, who was arrested at his luxury villa in Estepona. Reports indicate that he has lived there for some years and is the man behind a bet to lose horse racing scam in the UK in 2004. Jockey Kieren Fallon and others were acquitted at the Old Bailey when the trial there collapsed.32 people were arrested in total in the operation which also saw arrests in Dublin and LondonMore than 20 members of an international criminal organisation have been arrested today, Tuesday, on the Costa del Sol, and there were also dawn raids in London and Dublin. In total at least 32 have been arrested in total in an operation which continues open, so more arrests have not been ruled out.
Reports indicate that British gang were supplying firearms and drugs on the Costa del Sol where they had their base.
750 officers from the U.K., Ireland and Spain, took part in the swoops, the largest ever carried out by Britain’s SOCA, Serious Organised Crime Agency.

Kinahan’s right hand man, John Cunningham, and Kinaham’s sons Christy Jr. and Daniel were also arrested. Cunningham was found guilty in 1986 of kidnapping Jennifer Guinness in Ireland.

The gang is accused of being a major drugs supplier into the UK and the rest of Europe, and of supplying firearms to inner city gangs in the UK.

There are also reports that the gang offered money laundering facilities to other criminal groups, with building projects involved in this.

Several Spanish lawyers have also been arrested today in connection with the money laundering allegations. There are also reports of more searches in Marbella, Estepona and Fuengirola.

It’s thought that Spanish police had been watching the group for the past year, and that a code used by the criminals had been cracked. ‘Leaves’ were banknotes, ‘Computers’ were guns, ‘Waiters’ for weapons, and ‘Cars’ for drugs.

Spanish Interior Minister, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, speaking in Warsaw, said that an operation was underway against the Irish mafia on the Costa del Sol, and that Irish, British and Spanish police were taking part along with Europol. The Government’s Sub Delegate for Málaga, Hilario López Luna, also confirmed the police swoops by the Spanish UDYCO specialist units.

'Fear the worst' for kidnapped mobster | Canada | News | Toronto Sun: "It's been four days since the number three man in the Rizzuto mafia clan went missing and organized crime experts say Paolo Renda's life could be in serious danger if he isn't soon found alive.
Renda's wife, Maria, alerted police to her 70-year-old husband's disappearance Thursday afternoon, but the Montreal police major crimes unit has so far been unsuccessful in its search for the man.
Authorities are staying tight-lipped about any leads they've received so far. 'There are no developments in this case,' said Montreal police spokesman Daniel Lacoursiere. 'Kidnapping is still the main hypothesis, but all leads are being looked into at this point.'
According to former RCMP intelligence analyst Pierre de Champlain, 'there is reason to fear the worst' for the consigliere of Montreal's best-known organized crime family.
'Given his importance and his influence in the Montreal mafia, it makes him a special case. Remember that his nephew, Nick Rizzuto Jr., was killed five months ago,' he noted.
For de Champlain, who has written three books on organized crime, there's no doubt that the kidnapping stems from the intense competition between the various Italian clans to replace the Rizzutos as the top mafia family.
'This family has been the head of the Montreal mafia since 1984, so they're trying to unseat them,' he said."

Deadly Shower Posse gang has deep ties to Toronto - thestar.com

Deadly Shower Posse gang has deep ties to Toronto - thestar.com: "Christopher Coke is the son of one of the Shower Posse’s original founders, the infamous Lester “Jim Brown” Coke, who died in a Jamaican prison in 1992, while awaiting extradition to the U.S. himself. The other founder, Vivian Blake, died in Jamaica in March of this year, having been deported after eight years in a U.S. jail. American law officials have been trying to extradite the younger Coke for over a year.
The recent events in Jamaica, as well as the arrests in Toronto, mark a resurgence in notoriety for the Shower Posse, whose trail had gone quiet here in the past decade or so. After the Project Corral arrests, police said they weren’t sure if the gang went away and came back or just dug down deeper.
Local Jamaican leaders say they are concerned about the unrest in their home country."

Christopher 'Dudus' Coke Jamaica: Gunfire, fire bombs in barricaded slum

Posted On 08:45 0 comments

The Associated Press: Jamaica: Gunfire, fire bombs in barricaded slum: "Jamaica — Masked men torched a police station and traded gunfire with security forces in a barricaded slum in Jamaica's capital Sunday, prompting the government to declare a state of emergency.
Sporadic gunshots rang out in gritty West Kingston where defiant supporters of Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, a Jamaican 'don' who is widely suspected of controlling gunmen in the Tivoli Gardens neighborhood, have transformed the area into a virtual fortress cut off by trashed cars and barbed wire.
In barricaded Hannah Town, close to Tivoli Gardens, black smoke spiraled into the sky from a police station set aflame by molotov cocktails.
Officers fled the burning station in impoverished West Kingston, where a 2001 standoff between gunmen and security forces killed 25 civilians, as well as a soldier and a constable
Jamaican media have reported just two wounded so far: a police officer and a civilian, both hit by gunfire.
Sunday's violence erupted following a week of ever-higher tensions in the capital over the possible extradition of Coke to the United States on drug and arms-trafficking charges.
After Prime Minister Bruce Golding reversed his long-standing refusal to extradite Coke, the alleged kingpin's supporters began barricading the streets and preparing for a fight.
Earlier Sunday, police urged the neighborhood boss to surrender, calling the heavy barricades encircling his slum stronghold a sign of 'cowardice.'
The U.S., Canada and Britain issued travel alerts on Friday warning of possible violence and unrest in Jamaica. Most islanders have been steering clear of downtown Kingston entirely."

Top Montreal mob clan under siege: sources: "Police realized the situation was serious when Mr. Renda's luxury Infinity was found not far from his home in Montreal's ritzy Cartierville area. The vehicle's windows were open and its key still in the ignition, police said.
'We fear for his life,' said Constable Raphael Bergeron.
The apparent kidnapping -- or 'grab' as they are often called in the underworld -- is the latest in a series of attacks that target the Rizzuto organization, which is pegged by investigators as the most powerful crime group in Canada and a global mob powerhouse.
'This is a targeting of leadership, which is unusual. This doesn't look like street punk stuff or hot heads. It's another shot at the centre of power, at the family,' said an organized crime investigator who did not want to be named. In December, Nick Rizzuto, the eldest son of Vito, was murdered in an unsolved shooting in Montreal. He was seen as the emerging street boss of the organization."

Judge rules against conspiracy charge for Hilltop Crips | Crime News - The News Tribune

Judge rules against conspiracy charge for Hilltop Crips | Crime News - The News Tribune: against L. Hender Eugeneson, 35, but gave prosecutors the opportunity to file another charge against him by the end of Friday. Prosecutors responded by filing a single count of leading organized crime against him. He pleaded not guilty.
Felnagle’s ruling means the defendants likely will be broken into small groups for trial.
For instance, the nine defendants charged with causing a December 2008 fracas at a Tacoma Denny’s restaurant in which a security guard was beaten and shots fired in the parking lot probably would be grouped together for trial.
That would alleviate concerns about how and where to hold a trial with 20 or more defendants.
County officials have discussed renovating part of the County-City Building if holding a single trial for all the defendants became necessary. County Executive Pat McCarthy has yet to sign off on that plan, which would cost between $300,000 and $400,000."

Flare Network » Blog Archive » UK: Most wanted drugs gang boss arrested: "Mark Brown was one of Europe’s most wanted men when he went on the run in 2006 after Customs and the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) smashed his gang.
The 44-year-old, from Huyton, was said to be the “architect” behind the ruse which saw hundreds of kilos of heroin smuggled into the UK from Holland.
The authorities were unable to put an exact figure on how much of the drug the 13-strong gang were able to flood the streets with.
But in the 11 months they were being watched by SOCA agents, it is estimated they brought in upwards of £50m worth.
So far, Brown’s lieutenants and footsoldiers have been sentenced to a total of 148 years behind bars.
Brown will find out his fate on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to the conspiracy at Liverpool crown court today.
The gang’s activities were curtailed in October 2006, when eagle-eyed Customs officers at Hull docks became suspicious of a consignment of quad bikes coming in from Holland."

LAPD Detective testified that Slain Rapper was not a Gang Member | Street Gangs Resource Center – Los Angeles and California | The Gang Experts | Crips | Bloods | Mara Salvatrucha | 18th Street: "allegation is that the victim was the gang member. Aubrey Berry, the accused killer of Roderick Burton, is claiming that he shot and killed Burton in self defense. Defense attorney Howard R. Price has argued that Dolla was a gang member of the Mansfield Gangster Crips that had a predilection for violence, exhibited gang tattoos, and rapped about crime and weapons.
Eleven days earlier Berry was assaulted at Platinum 21 in Atlanta by Burton’s close friend and associate and LAPD Detective Mark Holguin testified that some of Dolla’s friends from that assault were documented Mansfield Crip members. Holguin was not so quick to identify Dolla as a member of the Mansfields. The defense introduced several exhibits that they believed was enough evidence to identify Dolla as an active member of the Mansfields, but Holguin disagreed. Price highlighted the following:"

It's no surprise gangs have got rocket launchers -- they will stop at nothing - National News, Frontpage - Herald.ie: "King Ratt gang and 'Fat' Freddie's crew to acquire grenades, which the informant labelled, as a codeword, 'pineapple'.
Chillingly, the informant also told us how they would be used. It was intended that which ever gang got them first, they would try to lure the other gang in large numbers to a pub and when all were assembled and settled a man would enter the property and throw a grenade into their midst.
Fortunately this never happened as there could have been huge loss of life. But tellingly, it was at this point that both gangs started drinking in the centre of the city in places such as Temple Bar and the south inner city. The simple reason for this was, and remains, that the amount of CCTV in those areas lessened the likelihood in their minds of being attacked.
When I was still in the service in the city centre, my Divisional Task Force officers would interrupt their gatherings by going into the pubs and clubs frequented and dispersing them. Simply put, it was a tactic to get in the face of these criminals and ensure that they could never get comfortable in one spot.
The intended victims were to be the remainder of the King Ratt gang, the outfit led by a jailed crime boss.
That's why I read with interest reports of Thompson's gang now acquiring rocket propelled grenades."

Singh told Deputy Prosecutor Larry Haskell during that hearing that she never talked to her brother, Anthony D. Singh, about his case, but police recorded jail phone calls between the two that show otherwise, according to court documents.
Anthony Singh, 22, was sentenced to 15 years in prison after a jury convicted him in December for a July 2008 shooting that didn’t injure anyone but made his Crips gang affiliations the center of the trial.
Jasmine Singh, who said her brother is not a gang member, appeared in court on the felony perjury charge today after receiving a summons."

Costa Del Crime: James Taylor, known as 'Pancake', are 'certainly talking' to the Sinaloa, along with Los Zetas: "'James Pancake Taylor, are 'certainly talking' to the Sinaloa, along with Los Zetas, classified by the US Drug Enforcement Administration as Mexico's most dangerous trafficking organisation. Los Zetas control access to the Venezuelan ports from where cocaine almost certainly has already been dispatched direct to Liverpool. With menacing understatement, Liverpool police told the Observer that the issue of Mexican cartels targeting the largest enclosed dock system in the world is a 'highly evolving' situation.
For the Bird of Prey, Pancake and their associates, the emerging Mexican connection follows a calamitous Spanish failure. In the aftermath of Colin Smith's murder, the new leaders of the Liverpool mafia flew to the Costa del Sol with the intention of laying down the law and inheriting one of the most lucrative cocaine-smuggling operations in the world. In Marbella, the successors to the Cocaine King were not welcomed.
Attempts to wrest control of Smith's connections in Spain ran up against a wall of silence and disdain. The newcomers were ostracised by the country's well-established nexus of cocaine brokers and middlemen – Colombian, Spanish and Scouse.
Smith's middlemen, it was clear, were not interested. And there was open conflict with a shadowy group of former IRA paramilitaries turned contract-killers called the 'Cleaners', believed to be responsible for more than 20 drug-related assassinations around Merseyside. In a summer-long feud in 2008, several members of the Cleaners were murdered.'"

Rocket launchers and cocaine seized in raid on crime gang - National News, Frontpage - Independent.ie: "TWO loaded rocket launchers seized from a crime gang by gardai yesterday are capable of destroying an armoured security van -- or even the homes of feuding gangsters.
The disposable launchers, which were seized along with a cocaine shipment in a raid by gardai, can be fired from the shoulder and discarded after being used only once.
The rockets, which had been fitted with warheads, were last night taken away by Army bomb disposal experts to the Glen of Imaal in Co Wicklow to be made safe.
The weapons had been stored by a major Dublin south city crime gang in a rented shed located at the rear of a block of five industrial units on the Clane road, at Longtown, Straffan, Co Kildare.
Armed officers from the organised crime unit raided the premises at 9.30am yesterday."

State College cocaine dealer sentenced in hit man case - Local | Centre Daily Times - State College, PA: "Michael Alexander be able to serve his 10-to 20-year prison sentence at the same time as the nine-to 18-year sentence he’s already serving on drug dealing charges.
“It doesn’t take away from his claim of innocence,” his attorney, Tami Fees, said.
But because it essentially adds only one year to the time he’ll need to serve before coming up before the parole board, she said, “we are pleased with the deal that we received.”
District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller said Alexander, like any other inmate, will still have to earn that parole and likely won’t get out in just one decade.
“I believe it’s highly likely that he’ll do more than his 10-year minimum before being paroled,” she said. “The original case is a very serious drug case and this is clearly a violent crime, which it appears he has yet to accept responsibly for, and that will absolutely affect the timing of his parole.”
Police say that after Alexander was jailed in March 2008 on the cocaine charges, he became depressed at the prospect of serving several years in prison and elicited the help of a local boxer — one of his few friends on the outside."

Why is the Jamaican Prime Minister Protecting a Reputed Criminal? - Black Entertainment, Money, Style and Beauty Blogs - Black Voices: "Christopher 'Dudus' Coke is not an elected official, yet he is known as the president. He presides over Tivoli Gardens, an enclave in Jamaica known as a garrison. To some, he is a community leader, to others he is gangster. Unfortunately for Dudus, the U.S. government has extradited him on guns and drug trafficking charges.
Despite the close relationship between the United States and Jamaica, Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding has refused to extradite Coke. Golding claims that the United States illegally wire tapped Coke."

Metro Detention Center guard is now in the custody of the jail that employs him, suspected of trying to smuggle drugs into the prison.
Authorities arrested 32-year-old corrections officer Anthony Kennedy on Tuesday following a two week long investigation after someone tipped off jail administrators that Kennedy might be bringing drugs inside.

Investigators say they found heroin, meth, marijuana, and tobacco on Kennedy when he showed up to work.

"We don't think this happened just one time. We think this has been a pattern. I believe the staff here believes that,” said BCSO Captain Gregg Marcantel.

Authorities say other corrections officers were helpful in providing information that led to Kennedy's arrest and have also arrested another suspect on outstanding warrants, who they say might have helped Kennedy get drugs on the outside.

The suspect, identified as Ruby Thompson, is not a jail employee. Samuel Lundvall, already in MDC custody, also faces charges in the investigation.

Jail time put off until he graduates | Courts | projo.com | The Providence Journal: "Suliva Hong, 18, of 231 Wallace St., will get five weeks’ liberty to allow him to graduate from high school before he must report to the Adult Correctional Institutions. And his co-defendant, Jose Brito, 20, of 282 Manton Ave., will enjoy the extra time, too.
Five weeks is “a lot longer than I typically leave people on the street” after they have been sentenced for a violent crime, the judge said from the bench Thursday. Expressing misgivings, Krause ordered that neither man associate with others in Dark Side during their release.
Krause questioned each man separately, gaining his promise to steer clear of Dark Side members and to stay out of trouble."

How Al Capone was untouchable - NYPOST.com: "Al Capone’s story has never been properly understood. The man known as Scarface has been turned into a cartoon bad guy. And in almost every account of Capone’s villainy, the role of the good guy is played by Eliot Ness, the dapper young Prohibition agent who led his team of so-called Untouchables in battering down doors and chopping up beer barrels to ruin the Capone empire and bring Public Enemy No. 1 to justice.
That’s not the way it really happened"

Another is that people who have graduated beyond street gangs are using their old associates in a rivalry over drug trafficking turf with the Montreal Mafia.'"

Analysis: Italian mafia brokering Mexican drug trade | Border crime

Analysis: Italian mafia brokering Mexican drug trade | Border crime: "mafia boss and notorious narco-trafficker Vincenzo Roccisano is scheduled to appear before a Nassau County judge after his February arrest, at a Long Island restaurant, for illegally re-entering the United States. Four years ago, Roccisano was deported from the U.S. to Italy after serving a 20-year sentence for routing drugs from Latin America to Europe.
Roccisano’s arrest may look like a throwback to decades past when Italian mafiosi – not Mexican traficantes – controlled the flow of drugs.
Yet the arrest represents a significant shift in the roles of various international crime groups. Experts credit Roccisano with revolutionizing the supply model for trafficking drugs from the Americas to Europe over the past two decades. In recent years, his Calabria-based syndicate, called 'ndrangheta, has outperformed competing Sicilian and Neapolitan clans in the European narcotics trade.
“The ‘ndrangheta has become the principle, transatlantic broker,” said Francesco Forgione, former director of Italy’s Parliamentary Anti-mafia Commission. “They’re working with the Mexican cartels to get drugs to Europe.”"

Killer gangster must do 25 years: Crown - Winnipeg Free Press

Killer gangster must do 25 years: Crown - Winnipeg Free Press: "Jeffrey Cansanay was convicted last month of second-degree murder, which carries a mandatory life sentence with no parole eligibility for at least 10 years. But the Crown wants Justice Shawn Greenberg to order Cansanay to spend at least 25 years behind bars -- the same punishment a person convicted of first-degree murder would face and the most severe sentence in the Criminal Code. 'This was not a spur-of-the-moment shooting. He was prepared to shoot rivals on sight,' prosecutor Gerry Bowering told court.
Cansanay, 23, was convicted for his role in the October 2005 killing of Phil Haiart. Haiart, 17, was walking in the West End when he was caught in the crossfire. Defence lawyer Greg Brodsky argued there is no reason to depart from the minimum parole eligibility because his client had no intention of killing Haiart."

Teenagers with gang ties sentenced for beatings in Henrico | Richmond Times-Dispatch: "Mentor Bislimi of the 2100 block of Cool Brook Drive and Kirkland Morris of the First block of Chase Gayton Terrace, both 19, will serve 10 years and seven years, respectively.
Bislimi was convicted of participating in a criminal act benefiting a gang, gang recruitment and two counts of assault by mob. Morris was convicted of two counts of assault by mob and a single count of criminal conduct benefiting a gang.
Bislimi acknowledged to investigators his association with the Crips gang and was described yesterday as the person who orchestrated and ordered beatings of people in the Nottingham Green and The Cloisters areas of western Henrico near Quioccasin Station Shopping Center.
Other gang members testified in hearings last year against Bislimi and Morris and were sentenced to 12-month jail terms. One victim was beaten and then kicked in the head; he temporarily lost the use of an arm and suffered a broken cheek bone. The beatings help elevate the status of participants, testimony has shown.
Morris was a Bloods member, a rival of the Crips', but he and Bislimi had been friends since childhood and apparently cooperated with each other, according to testimony last year."

Domenyk Noonan was described by the judge who jailed him in 2005 as a ‘very dangerous man who is clearly a risk to the public’

Domenyk Noonan was described by the judge who jailed him in 2005 as a ‘very dangerous man who is clearly a risk to the public’. But Noonan, 45, who has been let out on licence half way through his nine-and-a-half year jail sentence, said: “I started going to the Christian meetings in prison. Now I go to church every Sunday morning. People change. I’ve passed a lot of exams in prison.”He was jailed after a revolver and ammunition were found under the bonnet of his Jaguar when police stopped him. Noonan, – who has changed his surname to Lattlay-Fottfoy and is originally from Moston, is now appealing against the conviction. The Criminal Cases Review Commission is considering the case. It may decide to send the case to the Court of Appeal if it rules there is fresh evidence to consider. Noonan insists he was going straight at the time and that criminals planted the gun before tipping off police. He said he was ‘100 per cent sure’ that his conviction would be quashed. He added: “I was running a security firm legally, paying tax and insurance, and employing 450 people. They’ve all lost their jobs. I was legitimate.”
The freed gangster is the brother of murdered Manchester hard man Desmond Noonan, who was stabbed to death on a Chorlton housing estate in 2005. Shortly before the killing, the pair were filmed for a TV documentary about gangsters where Domenyk boasted of being the head of the Noonan criminal dynasty and having a ‘bigger army than the police’. He was jailed for 14 years in 1993, for escaping from prison, plotting a robbery and carrying a loaded gun.
The court heard he had planned the escape which he tried to pass off as a kidnap so he could take part in a £1.5m security van robbery.

The Press Association: Gangster loses conviction appeal

Posted On 21:06 0 comments

The Press Association: Gangster loses conviction appeal: "Gangster Curtis Warren, thought to be one of Britain's richest criminals, has lost his appeal against a conviction for plotting to smuggle £1 million worth of cannabis, court officials said.
Liverpool-born Warren, 46, started a 13-year jail term in December after he and five others were found guilty by a jury of conspiracy to import the drugs from mainland Europe to Jersey in the Channel Islands.
Warren, known by his nickname 'Cocky', was once Interpol's most wanted man and he is the only drug dealer to have appeared in the Sunday Times Rich List when, in 1997, he was listed as a 'property developer' worth £40 million.
Warren was convicted of the Jersey plot alongside John Welsh, 43, originally from Liverpool, who was jailed for 12 years, and James O'Brien, 45, from Glasgow, who got 10 years. Jason Woodward, 22, from Kent, and Jersey men Paul Hunt, 27, and Oliver Lucas, 23, were each handed five-year terms.
A spokeswoman for the Judicial Greffe, Jersey's court service, said defence teams appealed against the six convictions on five separate grounds but all were refused by a panel of judges led by Dame Heather Steel.
In addition, appeals against the length of their sentences made by Warren, Welsh, O'Brien and Woodward were also denied."

After a golden gangster life, cruel days - St. Petersburg Times: "This is Joe DeFede, a retired New York gangster who oversaw the rackets in the city's garment district in the 1990s. He once had a Cadillac, a driver and three horses stabled at Aqueduct.
These days, though, after a five-year prison stint, legal fees and the crushing costs of creating a new identity, the boss is almost broke. He and his second wife, Nancy, live on an annual income they said was not much more than $30,000: Social Security, a modest annuity and her pension from 20 years at a bank.
'That's the fear we got,' said DeFede, 76, known as Little Joe. 'We try to keep our payments up' — for the car, the house, a recent hip replacement — 'but sometimes we can't hack it.'
There's no gangster IRA, so the DeFedes live check to check (and under assumed names)."
